Looking for handmade vegan shoes made in Europe by a real workshop, not a contract factory? You are in the right place. BOHEMA is a Polish family brand of vegan shoes, founded in 2018 by Sebastian and Wiola. Every pair is handmade in our workshop in Kolbuszowa, Poland, where Sebastian''s father Edward has been a master shoemaker for over 30 years. We use plant-based leathers (Desserto cactus, Vegea grape, Pinatex pineapple, Viridis corn) and stitch every shoe by hand. Small batches. Real European craftsmanship. 40+ models, 14-day return.
📍 Polish family brand. Handmade in Kolbuszowa since 2018. 14-day return.
Why Handmade Vegan Shoes Matter in 2026
Most "vegan shoes" sold online today are made in mass factories in China, Vietnam, or Indonesia. Even brands marketed as European vegan shoes often use contract factories in Italy or Portugal that produce hundreds of thousands of pairs per year. Handmade vegan shoes from a small European workshop are different. Each pair takes 3 to 5 hours of human work. Each pair is checked individually. Each pair lasts 5 to 10 years.
The choice between mass-produced vegan shoes and handmade vegan shoes is not just about quality. It is about supporting a real craft tradition, about transparent supply chains, and about owning shoes that get better with age, not worse.
Who is BOHEMA: A Polish Family Vegan Shoe Brand
BOHEMA is one of the few European vegan shoe brands that is genuinely a family operation. Four people. One workshop. Full control of the production:
- Edward Szypula: master shoemaker, 30+ years of experience. Runs the workshop in Kolbuszowa, Poland. Cuts every pattern, stitches every difficult seam, oversees quality.
- Sebastian Szypula: Edward''s son. Co-founder of BOHEMA. Handles design direction, plant-leather sourcing (Desserto, Vegea, Pinatex, Viridis), strategy, online retail.
- Wiola Szypula: Sebastian''s wife and co-founder. Handles aesthetic direction, photography, social media, customer experience.
- Halina Szypula: Sebastian''s mother. Handles packing, warehouse, workshop logistics.
That is the entire BOHEMA team. No factory subcontracting. No anonymous designers. No corporate board. Just one Polish family making vegan shoes in their own workshop in Kolbuszowa, a small town in southeastern Poland (Podkarpackie region), 30 km from Rzeszow.
How Handmade Vegan Shoes Are Made: 7 Steps in Our Workshop
Every pair of BOHEMA shoes goes through 7 hands-on steps in Kolbuszowa:
- Design: Sebastian and Wiola sketch the collection. We make paper prototypes, test proportions on real feet. Not a Pinterest copy: each model is an original.
- Cutting: Edward cuts the uppers from plant-based leather (Desserto cactus, Vegea grape, Pinatex pineapple, Viridis corn). By hand, from patterns refined over years.
- Stitching: Single industrial stitching machine, not a factory line. Every seam checked by eye. Difficult areas (curves, toe tips) are hand-stitched with needle and thread.
- Finishing: Edges, linings, footbeds. Each pair adjusted individually for fit and finish.
- Hardware: Eyelets, laces, buckles, fittings: assembled by hand directly in the workshop.
- Sole Construction: Rubber or bio-material soles, glued and pressed. Each pair stress-tested for durability.
- Quality Control and Packing: Halina checks every pair before packing: stitching alignment, footbed placement, exact size match. Then ships with the BOHEMA care card.
Average production time per pair: 3 to 5 hours of focused work. In a typical Asian factory: 5 to 15 minutes per pair. That is why our shoes cost more, but they last 5 to 10 years instead of 1 to 2 seasons.

Plant-Based Leathers We Use: 4 Named Materials
Most vegan brands say "vegan leather" without specifying. We name every material we use, with origin and certifications:
- Desserto® cactus leather (Mexico): We have used Desserto since 2018. Made from nopal cactus grown without irrigation in Zacatecas. vegan-certified. Cradle to Cradle Gold certified. 200x less water than animal leather.
- Vegea® grape leather (Italy): Made from grape pomace, the waste from wine production. Italian craft. Soft and elastic, ideal for pumps, mules, derbys.
- Pinatex® pineapple leather (Philippines): Made from pineapple leaf fibers. Lightweight and breathable. We use it in flat slides and slip-ons.
- Viridis® corn leather (Italy): Newest material in our collection. Highly elastic, skin-friendly, strong drape.
Compare that to "vegan leather" labels with no source: BOHEMA gives you the exact material, factory, and country of origin for every pair.

FAQ: Handmade Vegan Shoes from Europe
Where are BOHEMA vegan shoes made?
Every pair is handmade in our workshop in Kolbuszowa, Poland (Podkarpackie region, 30 km from Rzeszow). The workshop is run by Sebastian''s father Edward, a master shoemaker with 30+ years of experience.
Are BOHEMA shoes truly handmade?
Yes. Every pair takes 3 to 5 hours of focused human work. Cutting, stitching, finishing, sole construction, and quality control are all done by hand in our workshop. No factory line.
Is BOHEMA a real family business?
Yes. Four people from one family: Edward (father, master shoemaker), Sebastian (son, co-founder), Wiola (Sebastian''s wife, co-founder), and Halina (Sebastian''s mother, logistics). No corporate board, no factory subcontracting.
What plant-based leathers does BOHEMA use?
Four named materials with full origin transparency: Desserto cactus leather (Mexico), Vegea grape leather (Italy), Pinatex pineapple leather (Philippines), and Viridis corn leather (Italy). All certified vegan.
Is BOHEMA vegan-certified?
The Desserto cactus leather we use is vegan-certified and Cradle to Cradle Gold certified. The BOHEMA brand is currently in process of obtaining its own vegan-certified brand certification.
How long do BOHEMA vegan shoes last?
5 to 10 years of regular wear. Our 2018 Akira Pumps and 2019 Bohema Pumps customers report shoes still in full use after 5 to 7 years. We design for longevity, not seasonal turnover.
How much do BOHEMA vegan shoes cost?
From 149 EUR (Twin Mary Jane in corn leather) to 239 EUR (Combat Workers men''s cactus leather boots). Most ballerinas 152 to 173 EUR. Boots 189 to 229 EUR. Sneakers 173 to 219 EUR. Outlet from 89 EUR.
Does BOHEMA ship to the USA?
Yes. 7 to 14 working days delivery to the USA. Free returns within 14 days. Customs duties may apply (estimated at checkout).

How is BOHEMA different from Wills Vegan Shoes or Mat and Nat?
BOHEMA is a single-family workshop in Poland with 100% in-house production. Wills Vegan and Mat & Nat are brand orchestrators that contract production to factories in Italy, Portugal, or Asia. Both models work, ours is more transparent and produces shoes one pair at a time.
Are vegan shoes really better for the environment?
When made from plant-based leathers like Desserto cactus leather, yes. Desserto uses 200x less water than animal leather production and the cactus plantation absorbs CO2. Plus zero animal use. Mass-produced PU "vegan leather" (oil-based plastic) is much worse: BOHEMA does not use it.
Can I return handmade vegan shoes if they do not fit?
Yes. 14 days no-questions-asked return. Shoes must be unworn, undamaged. Sizing help available before order: contact us at hello@bohemaclothing.com.
