Pflanzlich Shoes: What You Should Know Before You Buy

Pflanzlich shoes are no longer a niche. The market for pflanzlich alternatives is growing fast across Europe. But between marketing promises and reality, there is often a gap. This guide closes it.

BOHEMA has been crafting shoes from plant leather since 2019 — Kaktusleder, Traubenleder, corn leather. Handmade in a family workshop in Poland. No mass production, no compromises on materials.

What does "pflanzlich shoes" really mean?

The concept is simple: no animal was used for these shoes. No leather, no fur, no animal-based glue. But "pflanzlich" says nothing about quality. A shoe made from cheap PVC uses no animal products just like one made from Kaktusleder. The difference lies in the material.

Most pflanzlich shoes on the market are made from PU (polyurethane) on a textile base. It works, but it is petrochemical. BOHEMA takes a different path: pflanzlich raw materials as the foundation. Cactus instead of petroleum.

Chunky Loafers Black — pflanzlich loafers made from Traubenleder

Chunky Loafers Black. Traubenleder from Italian wine waste. 184 EUR.

Three plant leathers that work

Kaktusleder (Desserto®)

Made from Nopal cacti in Mexico. The plant needs no additional water, absorbs CO2, and regenerates after harvest in seven months. The result: a soft, durable material without PVC or phthalates.

BOHEMA was the first brand worldwide to use Kaktusleder in shoe production in 2019. Not as an experiment — as a conviction.

Swan No.1 Black — pflanzlich boots made from Kaktusleder

Swan No.1 Black. Knee-high boots made from Nopal Kaktusleder. 189 EUR.

Traubenleder (VEGEA®)

Made from grape waste from the Italian wine industry. Every year, millions of tonnes of pomace are produced — skins, stems, seeds. VEGEA transforms this waste into material for shoes and bags. Water-resistant, long-lasting, awarded the PETA Innovation Award and the Global Change Award.

Corn leather

A blend of organic fibres and bio-based polymers. The corn used is not a food crop. Certified by USDA BioPreferred and OEKO-TEX. Particularly supple and easy to care for.

How to recognise quality pflanzlich shoes

Five points to help you choose:

1. Material transparency. If a manufacturer does not say exactly what the shoe is made from, that is not a good sign. BOHEMA names every material — Desserto®, VEGEA®, Bio-PU — directly on the product page.

2. Manufacturing. Handmade in Europe means short supply chains and controllable working conditions. BOHEMA's workshop is in Kolbuszowa, Poland. A family business, not an anonymous factory.

Workers No. 3 Black — pflanzlich combat boots made from Kaktusleder

Workers No. 3 Black. Combat boots made from Kaktusleder. 209 EUR.

3. Craftsmanship. Stitched soles last longer than glued ones. Clean seams, even edges — details you only notice after weeks, when cheap shoes give up.

4. Certifications. GRS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, USDA Organic — these labels are not marketing. They independently confirm that materials are safely and responsibly produced.

5. Price. Quality pflanzlich shoes cost between 150 and 300 EUR. Anyone charging 40 EUR is cutting corners on material or labour. Anyone charging 500 EUR is charging for the name.

Care: How to make plant leather shoes last longer

Plant leather needs less care than animal leather. A damp cloth is enough for daily cleaning. For heavier dirt: mild soap, soft sponge, let air dry. No shoe cream or waterproofing spray needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are pflanzlich shoes as durable as leather shoes?

Yes — if the material is right. Kaktusleder and Traubenleder are abrasion-resistant, water-resistant, and keep their shape for years. Cheap PU shoes peel. BOHEMA's plant leather shoes are crafted in the same workshop that has been making leather shoes for decades.

What are BOHEMA's pflanzlich shoes made from?

Three main materials: Desserto® Kaktusleder from Mexico, VEGEA® Traubenleder from Italy, and corn leather. All certified, all free from PVC and phthalates. The exact material composition is listed on every product page.

How do the shoes fit?

Most models run true to size. For narrow feet, we recommend ordering half a size down. The fit guide shows exact measurements for every model.

Can I wear pflanzlich shoes in the rain?

Yes. Kaktusleder and Traubenleder are water-resistant. For heavy rain, we recommend the Workers or Chelsea models with thicker soles. After wearing, let them air dry — never on the radiator.

Does BOHEMA ship internationally?

Yes, with kostenloser Versand on orders over 200 EUR. All prices include VAT. Delivery takes 3-5 business days. Returns are free for 30 days.

Pflanzliches Leder — Fakten statt Marketing

Was ist pflanzliches Leder?

Vegane Schuhe online bestellen: Bei BOHEMA bestellst du direkt vom Hersteller — handgefertigt in unserer Familienwerkstatt in Polen. Kostenloser Versand ab 200€, 14 Tage Rückgaberecht.
